Easy Cuban Sandwich Recipe

This hearty sandwich is all about the layers and each plays an important flavor role in the taste. The main ingredient, however, is the two types of pork. Layers and layers of smoked ham are paired with thinly sliced pork tenderloin. The Cubano is the ultimate sandwich with the tangy, tart taste of pickles and mustard paired with melted Swiss cheese and pork.

Not only is this sandwich full of flavor, but it’s actually super easy to make! All the different ingredients complement each other so well and will have you craving this sandwich every week for lunch! It’s also easy to switch things up and make it your own. But believe me, once you try this recipe, it will be your new classic sandwich of choice!

Ingredients in a Cuban sandwich

This delicious sandwich has a handful of main ingredients and depending on whether you’re from Miami or Tampa, you might have different opinions on the right variation! See the recipe card at the bottom of the article for exact measurements.

Pork fillet

  • Pork fillet: This cut of meat is a MUST for this sandwich!
  • Olive oil: This will help the seasonings stick to your pork
  • Orange juice: The citrus flavor adds a nice touch to the meat.
  • Lime juice: Add a splash of lime to complement the flavors of the meat.
  • Cloves of garlic: If you are not using fresh garlic cloves, you can use minced garlic. ½ teaspoon equals approximately 1 clove of garlic.
  • Dried oregano: This seasoning is just the right flavor.
  • Cumin: The cumin adds a bit of flavor but don’t worry, it doesn’t add spiciness!

Sandwich

  • Cuban bread: I like to use my homemade Cuban bread recipe, but Italian bread will work too!
  • Swiss cheese: I love the contrasting flavor this cheese brings to the sandwich.
  • Smoked ham: Take this to the deli and it will be sliced and ready to go!
  • Dill pickles: You can never have enough pickles on a sandwich! They are the best !
  • Mustard: Regular mustard is what I use, but you can use Dijon mustard if you want to boost the flavor.
  • Butter: I used unsalted butter.

How to make a Cuban sandwich

This sandwich is all about the layers, and the heaviest part of the prep is cooking the pork tenderloin (only because of the cooking time).

Pork fillet

  1. Preparation: Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit and line a rimmed baking sheet with foil.
  2. Prepare the seasoning and pour: Place the pork tenderloin on the prepared baking sheet. In a small bowl, whisk together the olive oil, orange juice, lime juice, garlic cloves, oregano and cumin and pour over the pork.
  3. To cook: Cook for 30 to 40 minutes or until the meat reaches an internal temperature of 145ºF. Thinly slice the meat and set aside.

Sandwich

  1. Slice the bread: Cut each bread in half lengthwise and then cut into 4 equal parts.
  2. Layer: Start layering the ingredients by adding half of the cheese to the bottom layer of the sandwich bread. Garnish with smoked ham, pork slices and pickles. Place the rest of the cheese on top. Spread mustard on top of the bread and place it on the sandwich.
  3. Toast: Melt the butter in a skillet or griddle over medium heat. Add the sandwiches and place a heavy skillet, such as an iron skillet, over the sandwiches to press them down. Once toasted, flip the Cuban sandwich over and repeat. If you like, you can use a panini press to grill this sandwich to perfection!

Should you use Cuban bread?

It depends on who you ask, but in truth, you can use any soft bread to make this sandwich. If the bread is too hard, it will not press easily at the end of baking.

Which pork is the best?

This particular recipe calls for pork tenderloin because it is easier and quicker to prepare than pork shoulder. Either type of pork cut will work and the shoulder may be slightly more flavorful than the tenderloin. The choice is yours!
